Health Insurance

We strongly recommend that you get health insurance to cover your study period in Romania. For students from EU member states, medical care in Romania is provided based on the European Health Insurance Card. If you are a non-EU national, you should inquire whether there is a bilateral agreement on health care between Romania and your country.

If you find yourself in need of medical assistance, you can go to any authorized medical unit, public or private. Some private health insurance companies will refer you to a specific clinic or hospital that they have a contract with. Ask your insurance company to give you the list of all medical units they work with.

Medical Insurance will be paid in each applicant’s native/sending country. In Romania, emergencies are free of charge.

How to arrive in Brașov

Arrival by plane

Brașov does not have a local airport. The closest airports are located in:
- Bucharest («Henri Coandă»Otopeni -OTP) – 165 km (100 miles) South of Brașov - www.otp-airport.ro
- Sibiu (SBZ) – 137 km (85 miles) West of Brașov - www.sibiuairport.ro
- Targu Mures (TGM) – 169 km (105 miles) North of Brașov - www.targumuresairport.ro

How to arrive in Brașov from the «Henri Coandă» Otopeni –OTP airport

Visit TRANSPORT AEROPORT at the following address http://www.direct-aeroport.ro/en/ or M&M (http://www.transferairport.ro/en/) so you can book your transportation from the airport in the most convenient way for your travelling schedule.

You can also take the bus or train service from the airport to the centre of Bucharest or to Gara de Nord railway-station (Central Train Station) than choose one of the trains bound for Brașov Central Station.

Arrival by train

If you come by train from Western Europe, you will arrive at the Central Station in Brașov. International trains from Paris, Berlin, Munich, or Vienna to Bucharest stop in Brașov.

Once arrived in Brașov take buses no. 4, 50 or 51 from the bus stop in front of Central Station, toward the centre of the city. The bus stops at the University Rectorate building, where the Erasmus Office is located. A taxi station can also be found in front of Brașov Central Station.

Arrival by car

For those arriving by car, a driving licence, the vehicle registration documents and a valid car insurance are essential.

Coming from the direction of Vienna, Prague or Budapest, the border crossings are in Bors on the E60, Nadlac on the E64 and Varsand on the E61. Bors and Nadlac are the busiest due to trucks that pass through those two customs points. Coming from the direction of Trieste or Belgrade on the E70, the entry is in Moravita and Portile de Fier. E85 goes from Athens through Tirana and Sofia. and enters Romania in Giurgiu. The other border crossing with Bulgaria is at Vama Veche for those who come from Istanbul or Sofia on the E87. Arriving in Romania from Moscow, Kiev and Kishinev customs are in Albita on the E58 or in Sculeni, Stânca Costesti or Oancea. Coming from Warsaw, Kiev or Chernivtsi on the E85 the customs is in Siret in Bucovina.

Romanian driving regulations are more or less the same as the rules in other European countries. Obviously, for every driver a valid driving licence is compulsory, as well as valid insurance (Green Card) for the car. In case of an accident, contact the police to make a report. Drinking alcohol and driving is absolutely forbidden. The speed limit inside town limits is 50 km/hour and outside built areas 90 km/hour.

Taxi Companies

Taxis are a faster and more comfortable way to get around town than public transport. Taxis are also relatively cheap. All taxis must have meters and drivers are usually friendly.
Ask the approximate fare in advance and always make sure the driver uses the meter from the start. Check the taxi’s door for the price (lei/km).
Do not take just any taxi you will find at the taxi station! The private drivers can charge very high prizes!

Taxis are usually parked in designated areas, which are in the proximity of bus stations or other busy spots. When travelling outside city limits, you may be asked to pay the double fare per km (it is considered acceptable), or you could agree on a fixed amount in advance.

Never get into a taxi that does not have a sign with the company name on top.

Living in Brașov

For exchange students, no tuition fee is required by Transilvania University of Brașov. The following information should give you an idea of the average cost of living in our country. The amounts may, however, vary according to your personal lifestyle.

Meals

If you are living in the University Campuses (Colina or Memo) you will find it convenient to have lunch at the Student Refectory (Cantina studențească), for ≈ 5 euro/meal. The Student Refectories are very close to the Memo and Colina Halls of Residence.

There are evidently many restaurants in town that offer more varied meals from a wide range of European, Asian, Italian or Mexican cuisines, for ≈ 5-20 euro/meal. Food markets and supermarkets are opened every day, located in practically all parts of the town, where you can get fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs or cheese.

Accommodation

Ø University campus accommodation

Accommodation arrangements should be made in advance by filling in the Student Accommodation Request Form and sending it to the Erasmus Office (incoming@unitbv.ro).

University campuses residences:

Memorandului Student Residence (Memo): ≈ 100 euro/person/month
Colina Student Residence: ≈ 100 euro/person/month

Student residences have rooms, equipped with: furniture, sink, shared bathroom, free Internet access. No kitchens are available.

Ø Renting an apartment

If you choose to rent an apartment or a house in Brașov, we strongly advise you to contact a real-estate agency (agenție imobiliară). They can provide you with information about the most interesting offers on the market.

The cost of accommodation varies with the type, location, size and facilities, approximately 150-300 euro/month/apartment. Usually, you have to pay extra for all utilities: water, electricity, gas, telephone, etc., about 100 euro/month.

A deposit representing the rent for the first three months is usually required. It will be refunded at the end of your stay, provided that you leave the apartment in good condition.

REMEMBER!! If you decide to rent an apartment, a signed lease contract is needed, used also for temporary residence permit application.

Local Transportation

The Brașov public transportation network is very extensive and services run late into the night; specialized all-night services are also available.

Tickets can be bought at specialized RATBv kiosks or from newsagents, but remember to punch them in the bus. Even though there are no ticket gates when entering the vehicles, it’s advisable to have a valid ticket because ticket inspections are frequent. When someone requests your ticket, always ask them to present a job ID.

Currency

The Romanian official currency is the leu (plural lei). 1 leu has 100 bani. The exchange rate is established by the National Bank. The current exchange rate is about 1 euro = 4.80 lei. It is advisable to exchange money at banks or at Exchange offices available all around the city.

You can use your foreign debit card at ATMs and you will be issued the equivalent in lei of the amount of euro or US dollars indicated by you. Romanian ATMs only accept Visa, MasterCard and Maestro. Depending on your needs, there are several possibilities for money transfer: bank transfer or special transfer (such as Western Union), postal money order (“mandat poștal”).
